A chat with: Interior designer - Dexter & Plaid
One of the things I love about being on Instagram is connecting with other designers and getting to see their projects come to life.
I found Kevin Billings @dexterandplaid about two years ago and have been inspired by his work ever since. His designs are dramatic yet sophisticated, and distinctly his own. He is funny, talented and the perfect first guest for our series where we interview industry professionals and ask them what we really want to know. Without further ado… Kevin Billings!
Q: What are three words you’d use to describe your style?
A: Relaxed, curated, moody
Q: How do you know when a project is finished and the work is done?
A: It’s a feeling – it is easier to tell a project is complete once all of the furnishings are in, but I can be in a space and truly feel when it’s done.
Q: What advice would you give to someone planning a bathroom renovation?
A: The best starting point is to figure out what you don’t like about your current bathroom. Is it that it’s outdated? Do you wish you did or did not have a tub? Would an alternative layout work better for you? Having a list of “must haves” will make the project less overwhelming when talking with designers, contractors, and vendors.
Set a budget – or at least decide on a number you’re comfortable with spending on the renovation.
Meet with more than one contractor. Aim to get at least three bids so you can compare them and choose the best fit.
Research each contractor. Read reviews and check out examples of their work. You do not want to move forward with a contractor that hasn’t done anything like the style you’re wanting.
Q: What inspires you?
A: Old architecture and nature. I always try to incorporate earth tones into my designs, and I often pull from the surroundings of each project. I love adding character to my projects. This can be done by incorporating vintage or antique pieces, or by adding millwork of some kind – ideally both. I think these elements add warmth and make the space feel inviting.
Q: Do you do anything in particular to get your creative juices flowing?
A: I love to grab a coffee and take a drive on a scenic or back road with a good playlist. Something about driving, with no destination and good music, really helps my mind to slow down and the ideas can start to come through. I also review as many design/architecture books as possible.
Dexter and Plaid is based in Northern Virginia but works nationwide.
