Avoiding trends in home design

Recently, this article published by The Washington Post made its rounds on social media. It talks about the effect of consuming too much home renovation content and claims that, as a result, some homeowners are making design choices based on what they think others will like — instead of what suits them and their families best.
If you’re in a season of renovations, buying, or building, consider the following to keep your home from feeling outdated in a year or so:

Use natural materials such as stone, wood, and ceramics
Natural elements have been incorporated into home design for centuries. By incorporating organic elements into your home, it will be much easier to create a look that lasts.

Avoid asking friends and relatives for their opinions
It’s perfectly normal to feel overwhelmed or even stuck when faced with big design choices. Soliciting advice from others, however, is not the answer! Work with a designer who has taken the time to understand your personal style and how you use the space. Trust that they will present you with options to best suit your needs.
Instead of making decisions one by one, try to think of the process in a more holistic way. When all elements of the space work together, the result should be both beautiful and functional.

Be thoughtful of the inspiration you consume
When watching renovation shows, try to shift your focus off of the designer's choices and listen more to their thought process. Learn about sight lines, the pros and cons of different materials, floor mapping, etc.
Most of all, remember: everyone lives in and uses their homes differently. You deserve a space that feels like you.
