Our guide to hosting a summer garden party

Our guide to hosting a summer garden party

It’s officially summertime, and there’s nothing we love more than a backyard dinner with our favorite people. Hosting a summer shindig is all about making sure your setup is full of heart and effortless. Here are our go-to tips for throwing a garden party that’ll have your guests buzzing all season long.

Serve up seasonal, vibrant flavors

Summer calls for food that’s fresh, easy, and bursting with seasonal goodness. Kick things off with a grazing board—think creamy cheeses, juicy berries, and a handful of nuts and chocolates served on big wooden boards. For the main course, we’re all about a communal setup: try grilled veggie skewers or herby chicken that guests can pile onto warm flatbreads. Pair with a chilled orzo salad tossed with feta and fresh basil or grilled corn with a squeeze of lime. Dessert? Keep it simple with a tray of peach cobbler bars or a pitcher of iced mint tea with buttery shortbread. Don’t skip a signature drink—a big jug of cucumber-lime spritzer or rosé sangria is a sure win every time.

Consider your lighting, even when outdoors

Your backyard should feel like a cozy extension of your home. Battery operated lamps work well and keep your setup free of extension cord messes. Incorporate a few candlesticks in your tablescape so conversation can continue even after sunset, or string up fairy lights for a soft, twinkly vibe—perfect for capturing summer’s magic.

Materials matter

Dressing your table with linens will create a relaxed yet intentional aesthetic. Our vintage French napkins are a great option if you’re in the market, but mixing and matching what you have on hand will almost always surprise you. Adding throw pillows to outdoor seating is a quick and easy way to elevate patio furniture, and don’t forget to leave a stack of blankets near the fire pit.

Keep things flowing smoothly

A great party feels easy. Create a self-serve drink station—whether it’s a couple of coolers filled with ice or a galvanized metal tub, the important thing is that the drinks stay cold and accessible. Stack some tumblers near the beverages and keep plates and napkins close should guests need extras.

Prep like a pro

Double check that you’ll have enough seating, stock the guest bathroom with essentials and make sure your grill and speakers are working to avoid any last minute hiccups. Marinate proteins and prep salads in the morning so you’re not tethered to the kitchen all afternoon, and allow yourself plenty of time to get cleaned up before guests arrive.

All of this to say…

No one cares if your napkins match or if the yard is a mess. People will be glad to receive an invite regardless of whether or not you make dinner from scratch or order pizzas in. The real gift is time spent together.

Happy summer!
