Books deserve better than a flat-pack shelf. The antique pine bookshelves and display cases here were built at a time when furniture was made to last — solid joinery, lovely moulded detail, shelves that have been holding books for a hundred years and will hold yours for a hundred more.

We pick these up in England on our buying trips — from homes, old libraries, shops closing down. Some have glazed doors for displaying china or collections; others are open and perfect for books and objects. All of them bring a warmth to a room that modern shelving simply can't replicate.

Style them loosely. Mix books with pottery, art, and found objects. Let them look a little collected.
