The very best English hotels, lodges and inns–beyond London
Many magazines and blogs have covered the coolest spots to rest your head in London, but since we source most of our antiques in rural England, we’re well versed in the hotels, lodges, and inns of the smaller villages, countryside, and coasts. We’ve traveled extensively throughout the UK over the past few years and can guarantee this list won’t disappoint.
Designed by Nicola Harding, The Cavendish interiors are the closest aligned with our own design aesthetic, making it feel like home away from home. Located in the heart of The Peak District, and surrounded by rolling fields and short stony walls, The Cavendish is exactly what you picture when you think of an English countryside stay. Decorated with collected art, patterned papers, and cozy hues, it's a must-see for design enthusiasts, Bonus: Chatsworth house is just a short stroll from the hotel.
Rothay Manor is a boutique hotel with 23 rooms–and we've probably stayed in half of them! Located in the heart of the Lake District, a region known for its mountains and lakes, Rothay Manor offers the perfect place to stay between adventures. The on-site restaurant, Rowan, features local, seasonal food from area farms and every dish is as pretty as it is tasty.
Also in the Lake District—and this time right on Lake Windermere—Langdale Chase is well worth checking out. With comfy duvets and big windows looking out onto the water, it feels more like staying at a private estate than a hotel. And the views here are pretty hard to top.
If you’re looking for a smaller scale, more intimate lodging experience in Windermere, we'd choose The Penn. The rooms are thoughtfully-designed to be exactly what you want and nothing you don’t. We love the creative touches throughout, the stellar location and the ease of staying here with our children.
Middleton Lodge is a 200-acre estate that’s been intentionally restored, offering a dreamy, countryside retreat. Picture clean, neutral interiors, walled gardens, and restored farmhouses. Here, you’ll have the option of booking out a single room or an entire house. A popular choice for weddings and special events, we think it’s worth checking out for a just-because weekend away.
For a more modern stay, The Grand offers crisp linens and sleek interiors. The building was built in 1906 and still features much of the old-world charm we love, but the rooms feel updated and indulgent. The Grand is in the heart of downtown York, a mid-sized city with lots of good dining, shopping and exploring.
With a hefty list of awards and accolades, Saltmoore is a well-known and well-loved retreat in Yorkshire. This pick features an incredible spa and rooms that feel distinctly European—beautifully designed and spacious without trying too hard. The food is excellent, the staff really know their stuff, and the setting—between the North Yorkshire Moors and the sea—is dear to our hearts.
The Old Bell is playful and charming, while still offering a good deal of luxury. Rumored to be the oldest hotel in England, the interiors of this hotel are perfectly layered and updated. One of our favorite things about The Old Bell, hands-down, is the staff. Friendly and accommodating, they always make sure we have everything we need. For a group stay here, check out their townhouses (located across the street from the main hotel).
As far as British interiors go, The Swan Inn is it. Situated in a teeny village in West Sussex, The Swan Inn has been in operation since the 14th century (!). It only has 12 rooms, so book on early–and if you miss getting a room, you can always do just a dinner reservation instead.
If you’re looking for a more outdoorsy stay in England, pop Cove Valley in Devonshire at the top of your list. Three cabins are nestled within the 300-acre nature preserve, all designed in collaboration with HÁM Interiors–so you know you’ll be in for a treat. Every cabin has a wood-fired hot tub and breathtaking views of the natural surroundings. Get ready to sink in.
The Newt Inn Somerset is one of those places that is hard to find the words to do it justice. Indulge in the luxury of The Hadspen House or enjoy a charming, countryside retreat at The Farmyard. There’s both a working farm and a hotel spa, woodlands to explore and award-winning dining. The Newt has everything and is a destination all in itself.
If you prefer a full accommodation as opposed to a single room, consider booking with The Vaults at Stow–three individual apartments restored inside a former bank building in the heart of Stow-on-the-Wold. The interiors are cozy and make for a quintessential Cotswolds stay. You’ll find great shopping, dining and pubs just outside your door.
Located in the Peak District, The Peacock at Rowsley is a classic pub stay brimming with character and 17th century charm. Built in 1652 as a manor house, the stone cottage hosts 23 rooms and an award-winning restaurant. We've stayed here with the kids a few times and have always left feeling well-rested.
The Pig at Harlyn Bay is a favorite for those looking to be close to the beach–Harlyn Bay is one of the best surfing spots you’ll find in Cornwall for beginners. With thoughtful designs in each room and overly comfy beds, head to The Pig and prepare to settle in. The Pig hotels have multiple locations and they’re all 10/10 in our book.
