Antique English pine barrel back settle

This antique pine settle is a real showstopper, a long high-backed bench that curves gently inward like the side of a barrel. Tall planks run up the back to a narrow ledge across the top, and the pine has darkened to a deep chocolate brown. Each end is a high solid side cut into a sweeping curve, with a small ledge to rest an arm on. A long seat stretches nearly eight feet across and a low shelf sits just above the floor beneath it.

The seat and sides are worn smooth and shiny where people have sat and leaned for years, and the bottom edges show knocks and rough spots. It has a lot of stories in it. Pulled up to a long farmhouse table it would seat a whole family, but it would look just as striking in a big entryway or mudroom.
