Antique European oil on canvas - ships at sunset

Fishing boats with tall rust-red sails sit quietly in a harbor as the sun goes down. Two men row a small boat in the foreground, and a low headland with a few buildings stretches across the far shore. Billowing golden clouds fill the sky, and the water below breaks into short strokes of gold, green and deep blue. The painting sits in a wide gilt frame with carved rope-twist bands and little rosettes at the corners.

The canvas has a soft, aged glow with fine cracks across the surface. The frame has gentle rubs to the gilding that come from being moved and rehung by more than one generation. There's a signature in the lower right corner. It's a generous size to hang over a fireplace or sideboard, and the warm sunset colors would bring a lovely glow to a living room or study.
