Antique French rectangular basket

This antique French basket is long and shallow. Its straight sides are made from rows of upright wicker rods, with a band of twisted wicker running around the middle to keep them in line. The rim is tightly wrapped all the way around. More rods form the base, laid side by side and laced together in two places.

The wicker has mellowed to a warm honey color. There are a few scuffs and loose strands from use, but the basket is sturdy and holds its shape well. It's a lovely size for bread on the kitchen counter, or for keeping tea towels and napkins together on an open shelf.
