Three dairy cows share a quiet green meadow. One stands with its head lowered while the other two lie down in the grass, and a row of tall willow trees and a soft hazy sky sit behind them. A little wooden fence shows on the far left, and darker patches of grass in the foreground look like boggy ground. The painting sits in a deep gilt frame with heavy carved flowers and scrolls, and there's a slim gold edge around the canvas.

The canvas has a gentle glow and soft crackle across the surface. The gilding on the frame has darkened in the deeper carving and worn bright on the raised parts, which gives it lovely depth.
