Barristers wig cupboard

This wig cupboard has sixteen small compartments set in four rows of four, each with a hinged front and a small round metal catch. The dark brown finish has a soft sheen and shows lighter rubbed patches on the fronts. A moulded cornice runs across the top, and the whole case stands on tall, plain legs, with a deep apron beneath the bottom row.

Each compartment is lined with paper, and some of the linings are torn, so please look closely at the photos. That kind of wear comes with a working life in a lawyer’s chambers, where wigs were stored and taken out day after day. It is a wide piece but only about a foot and a half deep, so it fits along a hallway wall, in a dining room or in a kitchen as a run of hidden storage.
