French stoneware pot
This tall stoneware jar swells out gently through the middle and has a loop handle on each side. A few fine rings are turned into the clay just below the wide rim. The glaze runs from warm toffee brown into a cool blue-gray across one shoulder, with a soft diagonal sweep where the two colors meet. Little dark flecks are scattered across the whole surface.
The base has rubbed to bare clay in places, and there are a few small marks from long service on a French farm or kitchen shelf. It's a generous size for holding rolling pins and big wooden spoons by the stove. It also looks wonderful filled with tall branches or dried grasses on a dining table or hall console.
