Large dog kennel antique pine kitchen dresser
The top half of this big dresser is an open plate rack. Its three long shelves sit against a tongue-and-groove back, and a deep molded cornice runs across the top. Little spice drawers and cubbies are tucked in at each end of the lower shelves. Below the counter there are three drawers with round wooden knobs, and under those, two paneled cupboards sit on either side of an arched opening. That opening is the dog kennel, a cozy spot that was traditionally left open for the family dog to curl up in.
The pine has a lovely honey glow, and you can see knots and grain all through the back boards. The counter and cupboard doors show the rubs and dings of a busy farmhouse kitchen, where pots were set down and doors were opened day after day. It makes a wonderful focal wall in a kitchen or dining room, with loads of room to show off plates and pottery. The kennel space is just as handy today for baskets or a dog bed.
